(ACN) Cuba's Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in the inaugural meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan opened the first session of The 47-member body, which replaces the old 53-member UN Commission on Human Rights. More than 100 countries announced they would send official delegations to the first week of sessions, more than half led by ministers of government. Unlike the defunct commission, which met annually, the new UN Human Rights Council will meet at least three times a year. The first week of the initial two-week session will be devoted to speeches by different government representatives, while the second will deal with planning future work, Granma daily reports The Cuban Foreign Minister is scheduled to address the session on Tuesday. (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary General Kofi Annan expressed his confidence that the new Human Rights Council, founded in April, will operate free of biased, selective policy making. The 47-strong UN body announced its first session for June 19-30 in Geneva, with officials from 100 countries, replacing the old Human Rights Commission, which was dissolved in large part for unfairly attacking developing countries' domestic policy. Annan explained the top goal in the reform is to eliminate much criticized practices, such as selectivity and politicization, and to promote and protect basic liberties.
