Australia - Cuba Friendship Society in Perth Celebrate the 50 Anniversary of the Revolution

AUSTRALIA, 5 January, 2009. Members of the Australia Cuba Friendship Society in Perth came together on the 5th January to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

Fifty years of achievements were discussed and celebrated. Especially noted were Cuba’s accomplishments in education and healthcare; significant not only to the people of Cuba but also to many peoples internationally, achieved by the revolution despite the cruel blockade which has robbed the peoples of Cuba more than $89 billion. A toast was made to the Cuban doctors who have worked in 81 countries to provide health care to people who would not otherwise receive it.

As the 50th anniversary of this triumph was celebrated in Cuba President Raul Castro predicted the revolution would survive another half-century even though it continues to experience economic hardship from the blockade and will face further economic hardship from the devastating effects of climate change which has seen more frequent and more devastating hurricanes.

Members heard that in the latter part of the revolution Cuba has transformed itself into a more self reliant, less energy-intensive society, a country with the political determination to choose a path that has a commitment to the environment and future generations. Cuba is the only country to have received honours from the WWF for being the only country in the world that meets its criteria for sustainable development.

Member Len Howle read a poem by Antonio Guerrero that he had received in the mail that day and another toast was made to the five Cuban heroes.

In closing the meeting celebrated the special contribution of Fidel Castro to the Revolution and the peoples of Cuba and noted also the man from whom Fidel drew much of his inspiration, Jose Marti.

In the words of Raul, “We know that a man alone doesn't make history. But some men are indispensable, as they can have a decisive influence in the course of events. Fidel is one,"
