Cuba’s National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon in Canada for Academic Conference

CUBA, May 7, 2009. Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon arrived on Wednesday in Kingston, Canada, to take part in an academic conference on the significance of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

More than 200 experts from Cuba, the United States and another 12 countries will attend the forum, which will focus on Cuba´s economy, politics, government, and international affairs.

Cuba has sent a 39-member delegation to this conference which got underway this morning at the University of Queens, in Kingston, a city located on the eastern side of Lake Ontario.

The Cuban delegation includes the Head of Cuban Foreign Ministry´s North America Department Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, University of Havana vice-rector Cristina Diaz Lopez, and Cuba´s ambassador to Canada Teresita de Jesus Vicente.

Before arriving in Kingston, the President of Cuba´s NationalAssembly made a stop over in the Canadian capital Ottawa for a working visit. There he met with members of the Chamber and the Senate.

Ricardo Alarcon also held talks with the Canada-Cuba Inter-parliamentary Group, as well as with the leader of the Quebec Bloc Gilles Duceppe, and with the president of the Senate’s Health Committee,Wilbert Keon.

During a solemn ceremony held at the Canadian Parliament, Alarcon presented Senator Marcel Prud'homme, founder of the Canada-Cuba Inter-parliamentary Group, with the Friendship Medal granted by the State Council of the Republic of Cuba. (Cubaminrex- RHC)
