Great Celebration in Stockholm of the 50TH Anniversary of The Cuban Revolution

SWEDEN, February 4th, 2009. On Saturday January 31th at Husby Träff was celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Victory of the Revolution and the 156 anniversary of the birth of Cuba’s National Heroes José Mart. The festivity was organized by the Swedish Cuban Friendship Association and the “Committee 50th years of the Cuban Revolution”

More than 500 persons participated, filling Husby Träff and shared the enthusiasm of the beautiful political and cultural evening and expressed solidarity with Cuba and with the cause of the Five antiterrorists incarcerated in the empire’s prisons. Among the participants were members of the Swedish Cuban Friendship Association, the Committees Free the Five, representatives from the Left Party, Communists parties, KP and SKP, Socialists parties, The Communist League, Latin American residents associations as RESOCAL, RESOLVER and Victor Jara, among others; as well as a group representing the Cuban community resident in Sweden and the Association “Cubans for Cuba”. Many of the participants traveled from other cities in Sweden, such as Eskilstuna, Norrköping, Jönköping, Västerås, Sundsvall, Gothenbourg and Uppsala to celebrate this important event.

Speeches by the Ambassador of Cuba in Sweden, Ernesto Meléndez Bachs, Martin Österlin, President of the Swedish Cuban Association and Eva Björklund, member of the board of the Left Party and editor of the magazine “Kuba”, stressed with their words the importance that the fifty years of this heroic deed has for Cuba and the peoples of Latin America and the World.

The Ambassador of Cuba mentioned the enormous solidarity with Cuba movement shown all through Sweden and when receiving from the hands of comrade Martin Österling a giant cheque for the sum of 333 625 Swedish crowns, he thanked in the name of the Cuban people and of its Revolution the great contribution of all of those in Sweden that gave their solidarity donation to help refurbish the damage caused by the hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

Swedish and Latin American artists such as Ann Kristin Hedmark , Jan Hammarlund, Beatríz Piñeda & Trova del Sur, Ricardo Javier honored us with their performances and the Cubans Maria Domech, accompanied by Niklas Högberg and Janne Hellberg, María Llerena and Fredy Junior gave a very special Cuban touch to this musical and dance show.

Representing the Embassy of Cuba also were Counsellor Caridad Pérez and the First Secretaries Nélida Minobis and Alina Fernández, as well as other members of the staff.

This festivity in Stockholm put an end to the number of acts, events and initiatives for the 50th Anniversary of the Cuba Revolution that took place during December 2008 and January 2009.
