Alarcon: Obama can Order the Release of the Cuban Five
CUBA, June 23, 2009. Cuban Parliament President and Politburo member Ricardo Alarcon said on Tuesday that US President Barack Obama could order the release from prison of the five Cuban antiterrorists unjustly incarcerated in his country.
Alarcon delivered a keynote speech at the Theology Seminar held in this city on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Havana’s Spanish American Evangelical Congress, attended by religious leaders.
During his address, the top official said that President Obama has the power to put an end to the injustices committed against Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez.
Will impunity continue under his term of office?, asked the leader of the island’s legislative body, and added: “He (Obama) knows that the US Constitution authorizes the President to withdraw the infamous charge that was the starting point of a process riddled with arbitrary acts and violations from day one.”
The refusal of the US Supreme Court to review the case of the Cuban Five is the latest proof that anti-Cuban terrorism continues to have the support and governmental complicity of that country, affirmed Alarcon.
The more than 60 ecumenical leaders from some 15 nations participating in the event, which will end on Friday, have expressed their willingness to carry out concrete actions so the millions of believers from around the world support the just cause of the Cuban Five. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
