The Cuban Five Send Message to Participants in Havana’s Intl. Biotechnology Congress.

CUBA, October 22, 2010.-  The five Cuban antiterrorists imprisoned in the United States sent greetings to participants in the International Congress on Biotechnology, inaugurated on Wednesday in this capital.

In the letter addressed to scientists, specialists and workers in the field of health, and read to the over 300 delegates from some 30 nations, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez underline the importance of that branch for the good of mankind.

These heroes expressed that “if health could be brought to everyone, if wealth were distributed in the world in a different way and a spirit of fraternity and peace prevailed, everything would be different.”

“In this way, medicaments like Heberprot –P could be produced to treat and cure many diseases,” adds the letter, which includes greetings to participants in the forum, dedicated to the comprehensive treatment of diabetic patients suffering from foot ulcers, by way of the use of the Cuban drug, the only one of its kind in the world.

“There are effective medicaments, but their prices and other unjust obstacles prevent them from getting to those who need them,” continues the message of the five antiterrorists, unfairly incarcerated in the US since 1998 for monitoring the activities of Florida-based anti-Cuban groups.

The Heberprot-P has been used in 18,000 patients of several countries and it’s registered in Cuba, Venezuela, Argentina, Uruguay, Algeria, the Dominican Republic and Ecuador, explained Dr. Luis Herrera, director of the Center of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, the institution organizing the event, which will close on Friday at Havana’s Convention Center.

Also on Wednesday, the Organizing Committee acknowledged the work of Drs. Delia Charles, permanent researcher with the Institute of Angiology and Vascular Surgery and president of the Cuban Society of Angiology, and of Loida Gafado, national coordinator of the Program for the Attention of Diabetic Foot Patients in Venezuela.
