Cuban Five Case Shows Contradiction Between Justice, Law in USA.

CUBA, July 8, 2011.- The case of the Cuban Five, the antiterrorist fighters held unjustly in U.S. prisons since 1998, shows the profound imbalance of the U.S. legal system, lawyer Nuris Piñero stated.

"When I think about this case, it confirms for me the serious lack of balance, generated by a conflict between justice and law," Piñero, general director of the Cuban Law Firm for Special Services and lawyer for the families of the five men, told Prensa Latina.

Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez are serving harsh sentences for gathering information about terrorist activities carried out by anti-Cuban organizations in Miami, Florida, and preventing the deaths of Cuban and U.S. citizens.

It is obvious that the case of the Five, as they are universally known, is political and not criminal, because all guarantees and rights of the U.S. legal system that should have supported them were denied.

Thanks to international solidarity, after the case was made public, advocates of peace and justice join the campaign for their release, when they receive information about them.

Piñero made her remarks during the 5th International Summer School on Public International Law and the 7th Seminar-Workshop on International Humanitarian Law recently held in Havana.

The mission of the Cuban Five involved protecting human lives, preventing property damage and terrorist actions. According to U.S. law, a regulation established by law can be violated to prevent greater harm.

None of the charges against the five involved the use of weapons, violent action or the destruction of property. (Cubaminrex-Prensa Latina)
