Antonio Guerrero’s Birthday Could Have Been Different.
CUBA, October 16, 2010.- Today, Antonio Guerrero could have been surrounded by his loved ones, amid kisses and joy, celebrating his 52nd birthday, if he weren’t unfairly incarcerated in the United States for fighting terrorism to protect his country.
This Saturday, he could have been conversing about any topic with relatives or friends; if it were any other day of the week, perhaps we could find him working as the Engineer in Construction of Aerodromes he is, or giving classes in university classrooms.
Of these two experiences of his professional life he left an imprint in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, where Antonio Guerrero assumed the expansion of Antonio Maceo International Airport and the terminal’s remodeling.
Many people remember him as a farsighted man, hard to find in the modest and small investment’s office, since he preferred to be at the construction site next to builders and technicians, always with his eyes on every detail, like the arrival of supplies or the quality of work.
When in 1989 architect Lissette Soria began to work at the airport Tony was already there, as head of this type of investment of the island’s eastern area. That’s why she had the privilege of working and learning with him and admiring his exceptional qualities as both a professional and a human being.
There were many moments of tension at the construction site, she recalls, but the young man didn’t lose his smile and his affable manners. He was always ready to teach and share his knowledge, with the power of persuasion, capability and training characterizing him.
In spite of his youth, he was an example to everyone, since he worked countless hours and never watched the clock. The main work assigned to him –the expansion of the airport- was taken as an example of a construction model. Commander in Chief Fidel Castro participated in its inauguration, whom he personally explained details of the complex investment.
Antonio Guerrero also worked at the Projects Enterprise number 15 and at the Construction Enterprise for Architecture Works number 21 and was also a professor at the Faculty of Constructions of the University of Oriente.
He left pleasant memories in all those centers. Today, his former co-workers would like to congratulate him, shake his hand or give him a hug for his birthday, but Washington ignores the international demand for the release of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unfairly incarcerated in US jails.
