Friendship Institute Opens Book of Condolences for Death of Leonard Weinglass

CUBA, March 24, 2011.- The Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP) opened a book of condolences on Thursday for the death of US lawyer Leonard Weinglass, who was the defense attorney of one of the Cuban Five, Antonio Guerrero at the moment of his death.

 The tribute is a thankful gesture by the Cuban people for Weinglass’ friendship and his commitment to justice, says a press release by the institution.

ICAP said Weinglass, who passed away Wednesday in New York, devoted himself to his last breath to the defense of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters imprisoned in the United States, known as the Cuban Five.

The Cuban institution called on people and organizations working in favor of the cause of the Cuban Five to sign the book of condolences that will be open Thursday and Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the ICAP headquarters in Havana.

When learning the news, Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Cuban Five imprisoned in the federal penitentiary of Victorville, California, sent a message of condolences to Weinglass’ family and friends on behalf of the Cuban Five, their relatives and the millions of Cubans and people from all over the world who trusted the lawyer and civil rights activist.

 Likewise, members of the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 expressed their sorrow for the loss of lawyer who is worldwide known for the defense of the Chicago Eight, Jane Fonda and Angela Davis, among others. (Cubaminrex-AIN)
