Costa Ricans Call for the Freedom of the Cuban Five
CUBA, September 7, 2010.- The Costa Rican Solidarity Committee with Cuba will call for the freedom of the Cuban Five from the top of the Poás volcano. José Francisco Varela, a member of the committee, said that the event will take place next Sunday, in honor of the 12-year anniversary of the imprisonment of Gerardo Hernández, René González, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and Antonio Guerrero. The activity will include the signing and collecting of letters written to U.S. President Barack Obama, and other authorities in the United States demanding the end to the injustice against the Cuban Five. The activity in Costa Rica will take place simultaneously with similar events in other countries in Latin America and in Europe.
In Moscow, the National Russian Committee for the freedom of the Cuban Five will show films about the anti-terrorist fighters. According to Elena Loshkina, the coordinator of this organization, the theme of one of the films is how the U.S. government financed the publication of negative articles against the Cuban Five in the press.
