Suriname: Solidarity with the Cuban Five
CUBA, September 9, 2010.- The case of the five Cuban antiterrorists incarcerated in the United States since 1998 is having wide coverage in Suriname, where a Cuban medical brigade from the Caribbean island is voluntarily offering its services.
The members of that group dedicated the celebration of their third anniversary to these patriots -Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez y Rene Gonzalez-, the Cuban Foreign Ministry’s Web site reports.
For his part, Cuban ambassador Andres Gonzalez said that on the occasion of the 5th International Campaign for the Release of the Five Heroes, the Association of Friendship with Cuba and other groups are organizing activities to demand the US government the release of these men from prison.
The diplomat added that these activities are aimed at spreading in Suriname the truth about these antiterrorists, who are an example of dedication, courage and loyalty to their revolutionary principles.
The Dagblad Suriname newspaper published an article highlighting the World Campaign in Solidarity with The Five, to begin on Saturday.
The text points out that these antiterrorist fighters have been incarcerated for 12 years and have been the victims of cruel sentences for crimes they have not committed.
The article adds that the US government paid 74,000 dollars to journalists from the big media in Miami so they published distorted stories about Cuba and manipulated the information related to the aforementioned antiterrorists.
With a population of a little over half a million people, Surinam is one of the smallest nations in South America –its territory covers only 163,270 square kilometers- and it was previously known as Dutch Guiana. (Cubaminrex-Cuban News Agency)
