Venezuela Demands Freedom for Cuban Antiterrorists Imprisoned in the US
CUBA, May 12, 2010. Venezuela’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Jorge Valero, demanded on Tuesday the release of five Cuban antiterrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States.
Speaking before the UN Security Council, the Venezuelan diplomat said that the courage and determination showed by Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez —internationally known as the Cuban Five— is an example of dignity to the world.
In 1998, the Five were arrested and given harsh and unjust sentences in Miami for monitoring anti-Cuba groups in South Florida that were planning and carrying out terrorist attacks against the island. “Any of the numerous violations committed during their trial would be enough to order the release of the five Cuban patriots,” said Valero.
