Attorney General of Sri Lanka Briefed on the Cuban Five Case
SRI LANKA, December 28, 2011.- The Ambassador of Cuba, Mrs. Nirsia Castro Guevara met Attorney General of Sri Lanka, Ms. Shanti Eva Wanasundara and briefed her on the case of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly imprisoned in U.S.A. Ambassador Castro availed this opportunity with the senior official to present to her a report on the irregularities of the case followed against Gerardo, Antonio, Ramon, Fernando and René, the lengthy trial they were subjected to, the harsh and long sentences imposed to them, the appeals filed by defense lawyers, the Supreme Court's refusal to consider appeals despite having received numerous requests suggesting that the process be revised, the U.S. government's inability to prove that the five Cubans posed any threat to security of that country, the refusal to allow the trial to be held in another city, not in Miami where it prevails a climate of hostility towards Cuba and to the Five, the U.S. government's refusal to access to the evidence to prove the innocence of the Five, the recent request of the government not to considered the applications for Habeas Corpus even though new reports indicated the federal government recruited journalists to write against the Five during the time of trial and the countless opinions of persons, association and entities, including the Committee Against Arbitrary Detention of UN Human Rights Council that have expressed their views and demand that the process is reviewed and the Five released.
During the meeting the Ambassador and the Attorney General addressed other issues of interest to both sides and laid the groundwork for future exchanges. Mrs. Wanasundara, is the first woman to hold this high office and assumed office on Sept. 13 with taking her oath before the president. (Cubaminrex - Embacuba Sri Lanka)
