Cuban Vice President Highlights Progress Towards Latin American Integration
Havana, May 29, 2006. (ACN) Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage Davila highlighted successful steps being made through the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) – a Latin American integration effort being promoted by Cuba, Venezuela and now Bolivia.
In statements to international press in the Bolivian capital of La Paz, Lage stressed the importance of agreements signed between that country, Cuba and Venezuela for regional integration.
The Cuban official also referred to the island’s collaboration with Bolivia in carrying out a mass literacy campaign. That program is occurring at the same time Cuban specialists are offering free medical assistance to over 100,000 low-income Bolivians as part of the “Operation Miracle” eye-surgery program.
Bolivian President Evo Morales defended both Cuban and Venezuelan assistance as he lashed out against conservative elements of his country, calling them “servants of the United States,” reported Prensa Latina and DPA news agencies.
