Bolivia and Venezuela Sign New Accords

BOLIVIA March 11, 2007.- The governments of Bolivia and Venezuela signed four new agreements on Sunday that boost the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), reported Prensa Latina.

The accords signed by Presidents Evo Morales (Bolivia) and Hugo Chavez (Venezuela) were in the areas of mining, telecommunications, hydrocarbons, lumber, tourism, cement and others.

Bolivia also agreed to join the Bank of the South, recently created by Venezuela and Argentina.

The two leaders also announced a conference of Latin American governments and peoples for June 2 to 4. The gathering will address issues such as energy production, industrialization of hydrocarbons and the defense of human rights.

Morales thanked Chavez for his concern over the heavy flooding occurring in Bolivia in recent months, associated with the El Niño climatic phenomena.

Amid applause, Chavez pointed out that four countries (Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua) are creating a new space for unity with the Bolivarian Alternative to the Americas.

Chavez said that Venezuela, Bolivia and Argentina —with the largest gas reserves in the world— have decided to create an association of gas producing and exporting countries.

He further announced that one of the first projects of the Bank of the South could be to build a highway linking Bolivia with other countries of the continent.

Also attending the ceremony was Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon who said "more countries are joining the ALBA and we will continue to grow."

Chavez arrives in Nicaragua Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez arrived Sunday night in Managua for his second official visit to the Central American country since Daniel Ortega took office in January. (Cubaminrex-Granma)
