Peace Base Inaugurated in Havana
CUBA, September 24, 2009. The embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Cuba inaugurated on Thursday in this city a “Peace Base” in response to the US military bases that will be opened in Colombia.
This peaceful initiative is an idea by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, and, besides the one opened in Havana, there are others in the Venezuela-Colombia border and in Caracas and Mexico.
The Peace Base inaugurated on Thursday is located at the Livia Gouverneur Bolivarian Center for Computing and Telematics, located at the Cuban capital’s Miramar Trade Center.
Venezuelan ambassador to Havana, Ronald Blanco, and the President of the Cuban Movement for Peace, José Ramón Rodríguez, were in charge of the official opening of the center, made up by a hall for Internet navigation and another one for presentations.
In his opening speech, the Venezuelan diplomat expressed that these peace bases are opened with the purpose of creating awareness on the threat the US military enclaves in Latin America represent.
The Center, which will be opened every day and the programming of which will be announced every week, will play its role by way of conferences, talks and the screening of audiovisuals among other activities, he explained.
He stressed the importance of harmony for the development of the social plans carried out by the nations that are members of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas (ALBA).
In this regard, he recalled the disastrous consequences of the Colombia Plan for the unity of countries in the region, a plan that is part of the US strategy of increasing its military presence in the area, under the pretext of a false “struggle against drug trafficking.” (Cubaminrex- ACN)
