Moral Authority of Cuba Highlighted at Port of Spain Civil Forum

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, April 15, 2009. The secretary general of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), Luis Andrade, stated today that the United States was being ostracized for its policy toward Cuba, a country that has reversed the isolation with its greatest force, moral authority.

In an interview with PL, after concluding his address in the civil society forum of the 5th Summit of the Americas, the diplomat pointed out that the exclusion of Cuba from the Inter-American system has drawn to a close, is obsolete, is questionable on all sides, ethical, moral, political and even commercial.

According to Andrade, the blockade is an anachronism; it is genocidal because it seeds death by hindering access to food, medications or sophisticated medical equipment.

Andrade said he felt proud to preside over the ACS, an organization of which Cuba has been a member since its foundation in 1994, the same year that the first Summit of the Americas was convened, in Miami.

In the opinion of the secretary general of the ACS, there is no other small country in the history of humankind that has been subjected, by one of the world powers, to so much aggression, in so many different ways.

Addressing the forum on "Challenges and opportunities in the current economic atmosphere" on Wednesday, Andrade said Cuba was an example of what a country can do to stave off cause economic collapse, after all the island suffered when most of his external trade disappeared, following the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
