SELA Opposes US Blockade on Cuba VENEZUELA, March 31, 2009. The 27 country members of the Latin American, Caribbean Economic System (SELA) issued a statement on Tuesday calling for an end of the half century US economic, financial blockade imposed on Cuba. The statement came at a meeting to review economic relations between the United States and Latin America and the Caribbean in the context of the current crisis, SELA Permanent Secretary Jose Rivera told Prensa Latina. The best sign the Obama administration might send to the continent would be "a firm decision to put an end to the blockade, which is a widespread demand, as could be witnessed today in discussions of members of SELA and the international community," said Rivera. He stressed that the start of a new relationship between the United States and the rest of the continent requires decisive action in that regard. (Cubaminrex- Granma)
