Ibero-American Summit Slams Terrorism against Cuba

CUBA,  December 1, 2009.-  The 19th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government demanded today in the Portuguese city of Estoril that terrorist Luis Posada Carriles be extradited to Venezuela to be tried in that country.

Posada Carriles has been the mastermind of several attempts and violent actions against Cuba, including the mid-air blowing of a Cuban airliner in 1976, in which all 73 people on board died.

The presidents of 22 countries participating in the Summit rejected the fact that Posada Carriles continues to enjoy impunity.

After three days of discussions in the Portuguese resort, the Ibero-American community agreed to support all efforts aimed at achieving the extradition of the terrorist requested by Venezuela to the U.S. government, reported Prensa Latina.

The forum reaffirmed the importance of the extradition as an essential step in the fight against terrorism and encouraged those States that have been requested by Ibero-American nations to consider the case to do it in accordance with the due legal framework.

Meanwhile, the government leaders of 19 Latin American countries plus Spain, Portugal and Andorra urged states that have not joined the conventions and protocols on that world scourge to consider the possibility.

They also encouraged these states to sign international agreements that compel them to provide legal assistance, try and sentence in a prompt and appropriate procedure all those people who finance, sponsor or take part in terrorist acts, in compliance with International Law.

It was mentioned in particular the international agreements that include sanctions for violent actions against public cargo or passenger public transportation means, diplomatic representations, tourist and public facilities.

We will keep on working to adopt necessary measures and according to our respective obligations in virtue of International Law to legally prohibit the incitement to commit terrorist crimes and prevent such behaviors. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
