Cuban doctors at work in the coastal zone of Suriname

SURINAME, February 4, 2008. Dr. Angel Castillo Fis and Dr. Orlando Morejón Perez are working and living in the coastal zone of Suriname as part of the medical cooperation that Cuba offers to this country.

Dr. Angel Castillo Fis, specialist in Integral General Medicine, has been living and working in the community of Wageningen for over a year. He not only works as a doctor but is also the director of a policlinic. Dr. Castillo has examined more than 10,000 patients. This number includes the patients who were examined during house visits.
Together with nurses of the policlinic and personnel of the Regional Health Service he has developed programs for the promotion of health and the prevention of diseases. One of these programs supports the fight against HIV and aids.
The Cuban doctor has a good and friendly relation with the population of Wageningen. Dr. Castillo has attended many childbirths making it unnecessary for pregnant women to travel to distant locations to deliver their babies.
Presently a room in the policlinic is being renovated to be used as an emergency room. Wageningen is located 187 kilometers west of Paramaribo, the capital city of Suriname

Dr. Orlando Morejón Perez is living and working in the district of Coronie. He has now been working in this community for only two months, but already he has great prestige with its inhabitants and good relations with the personnel of the policlinic.
In the two month period he has examined around 1,094 patients.
Dr. Morejón who is a specialist in Integral General Medicine has high scientific credentials.
In Coronie his patients include children, pregnant women and a large number of patients with diabetes and hypertension. In the policlinic, he works closely with Dr.Brewster from Suriname.
Coronie is located 138 kilometers west from Paramaribo.

Dr. Castillo and dr. Morejón not only offer medical assistance to their patients but they also evaluate social aspects that may influence the state of health of the population.

The Cuban ambassador to Suriname, Andrés González Garrido, expressed high appreciation for the work of these Cuban doctors during his recent visit to the districts of Nickerie and Coronie. The diplomat visited the health institutions and exchanged views with the Cuban cooperators and the Surinamese who work with them.
On his visit the ambassador was accompanied by Dr. Eddy Millán Escalona, head of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Suriname.
