Guatemalan President Said US Blockade of Cuba Is Anachronistic

CUBA, February 16, 2009. After arriving in Cuba late Sunday night, Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom told the press at Havana's international airport that he opposed the nearly 50-year blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.

“The blockade continues to be unjust. It is anachronistic and it should be ended. All of Latin America is saying that,” said Colom.

Colom was met at the Jose Marti International Airport by Cuban Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer Cabrera. He stated his satisfaction for being in Cuba for the first time since taking office as president of Guatemala.

Colom told the press that he brings with him the Order of the Quetzal for the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro. The honor is the highest bestowed by Guatemala. (Cubaminrex - ACN)
