Salvador Allende (1908-1973) was one of the founders of the Socialist Party in Chile in 1933, becoming president in 1970 up until the Pinochet-led coup d'etat on September 11, 1973, in which he died in combat at the Palacio de la Moneda. After the tribute, Michelle Bachelet talked with members of the Chilean National Children's Chamber Orchestra visiting Cuba on occasion of the International Book Fair beginning today in Havana. Chile is this year's guest country of honor. Following, Bachelet attended a business seminar of economic experts from both nations at the Hotel Nacional, where she expressed her country's rejection to the US blockade of Cuba. Bachelet reaffirmed Chile's stance in favor or fair international trade and in opposition to long-standing discriminatory commerce practices. "I'm talking about a very concrete issue, the United State's blockade against Cuba, which seriously affects the living conditions of the Cuban people, even more so given the current crisis." The Chilean president went on to encourage businesspeople from both nations to work together to identify opportunities to work together. Vice President of the Cuban Council of Ministers Ricardo Cabrisas said that commercial exchange between Cuba and Chile has increased over recent years, and that Chile is now the island's seventh largest regional trade partner, with trade reaching US$ 84 million in 2007. However, Cabrisas noted that Cuban exports to Chile are still low and that there is room to expand trade, especially in the biotechnological sector. (Cubaminrex- ACN) |
