Honduran President Announces New Agreements with Cuba CUBA, March 3, 2009. The President of Honduras, Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales, expressed his satisfaction with his current visit to Cuba. He arrived on Monday evening to participate in the 11th International Meeting of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems that began in Havana yesterday. The Central American leader was welcomed at the Jose Marti International Airport in the Cuban capital by Rodrigo Malmierca, Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment and other government officials. "It is an honor for me, as the President of Honduras, to participate and to express our ideas in this international forum," Zelaya told reporters. In addition, the Honduran leader announced that during his stay in the Caribbean archipelago he would sign new agreements with Cuba in the areas of health, education and trade. Zelaya expressed his admiration and respect for the homeland of Jose Marti and recalled that his country is a member of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), a regional bloc working for integration and cooperation that also comprises of Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Dominica. During his visit to Cuba, the Central American head of state and government will meet with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro.
