Leo Brouwer Wins 2009 National Cinema Award CUBA, March 19, 2009. The 2009 National Cinema Award was granted on Wednesday to guitarist and orchestra director Leo Brouwer for his contribution to the Cuban filmmaking industry over the past 50 years. According to Granma news daily, Brouwer's dozens of essential soundtracks and his role in the perception of cinema as an authentic and emancipating expression of culture were taken into account. This award is the highest granted by the Cuban Culture Ministry and the Cuban Institute of the Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) in this field. The presentation of the award will take place on March 24th at the Karl Marx Theatre in Havana during a gala to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ICAIC. Recently, ICAIC and the Cuban Music Recording and Editing Company (EGREM) paid tribute to Brouwer on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Film director Manuel Perez Paredes said that he and his colleagues regard Brouwer as a member of ICAIC and praised his work and contribution to classics of Cuban film history, such as Memorias del Subdesarrollo (Memories of Underdevelopment) and Lucia.
