Suriname, May 8, 2009. The Fourth Session of the Joint Commission Cuba–Suriname started on May 7 in Havana, concluding on May 8. The Surinamese delegation is headed by Jane Aarland-Nanhu, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Other members of the Surinamese delegation are: Ike Antonius, Chargé d’ Affaires of the Embassy of Suriname in Cuba, Allan Li Fo Sjoe, Acting Chairman of the Board of the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, and representatives from the ministries of Education, Health, Agriculture, Social Affairs, Home Affairs, and the Advanced Teachers Training Institute. The Cuban delegation is led by Orlando Requeijo Gual, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment. Topics on the agenda are the existing co-operation with regard to health, teaching of the Spanish language, sports and agriculture, and new areas of co-operation between the two countries, such as archiving techniques and community development. A co-operation agreement between the Ministries of Public Health of Cuba and Suriname was signed in August 2007 and another was signed in July 2008 regarding ophthalmology services to be provided by Cuban specialists working in the‘s Lands Hospital in Paramaribo, the capital of the Republic of Suriname.
