Cuba and Guyana keep excellent bilateral relations as shown by the cooperation projects maintained between the two countries in the health and education sectors and by the Guyanese government’s position against the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba. In this regard, Rodrigues-Birkett mentioned the meeting between his country’s president, Bharrat Jagdeo, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during which he demanded the lifting of that unilateral measure. During the official talks held at the building of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rodriguez stressed that the two nations share common goals in the international arena and in organizations like the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries. Cuba and Guyana established diplomatic relations in 1972, which have become stronger over the past few years with the implementation of cooperation programs in areas of common interest.
