IOL Surinamese delegation in Cuba
SURINAME, April 16, 2010. A delegation of the Advanced Teachers Training College (IOL) is now in Cuba for a three-week internship. The delegation consists of 22 and is headed by the director of the IOL, Archibald Marshal, and Mariane Monkau, Coordinator of the Spanish language Department of the IOL. The delegation members are Spanish language teachers of various education institutes in Suriname.
The foundation for this internship was laid in the fourth session of the Joint Commission Suriname – Cuba which convened in May 2009 in Havana.
According to Suriname’s Ambassador in Cuba, Ike Antonius, who attended the opening session this internship is an implementation of several parts of the agreements between Cuba and Suriname with regard to higher education. He pointed out the importance of this cooperation, especially between the IOL and the Cuban universities.
The Ambassador emphasized the importance of knowledge of the Spanish language for communication, cultural exchanges and integration of Suriname in the region. The University of Matanzas and the University of Holguin will be host to the delegation.
At the University of Matanzas, the delegation will take a crash course to improve their teaching skills. The delegation will also attend the International Language Conference where they will give a presentation about the Spanish language education in Suriname.
Up until now several Cuban teachers have given Spanish language courses at the IOL as part of the cooperation between the IOL and the University of Holguin. The Cubans also assisted in improving the curriculum for the MO – A course of the IOL.
The objective of this cooperation is reduce the shortage of certified Spanish teachers and to develop the curriculum for learning Spanish and to develop a post graduate MO-B course and a masters course in Suriname.
According to Ambassador Antonius the cooperation between the Anton de Kom University and the University is also going well. Under that framework, there is an exchange of experts for the masters course in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Suriname. (Cubaminrex-EmbaCuba Suriname-De Ware Tijd)
