First meeting of Cuban residents in the Caribbean held in Jamaica JAMAICA, December 2nd, 2010. – Last Saturday, November 27, the First Meeting of Cuban Residents in the Caribbean “IN THE DEFENSE OF THE HOMELAND” was held in Kingston. In the preparations and success of the meeting, the Association of Cuban Residents in Jamaica, which interacted with its counterparts from the region’s countries, played an important role. With the presence of Cuban Ambassador Yuri Gala, Consul Micaela Ramirez and comrade from ICAP, Yamil Martinez, an extensive and enriching exchange of viewpoints was generated, during which, the delegates examined organizational issues within their respective associations and the specific sphere of action in which they work, while opinions on how to continue to advance in the promotion of the patriotic feeling based on a greater dissemination of the Cuban reality, its traditions, its history and other elements of its culture. There was full agreement with respect to the creation of a working group in order to set up an Association of Cuban Residents in the Caribbean which would be named after national poet Nicolas Guillen. Likewise, experiences were exchanged on the activities held in favor of the homeland, placing special emphasis on those actions in defense of our national sovereignty and the right of the Cuban people to self-determination. In this context, the participants offered details about the work carried out relative to the unjust U.S. blockade, the terrorist attacks against Cuba and the unjust imprisonment in US soil of Five Cuban antiterrorist fighters. These issues were also included in the Final Declaration an in the Plan of Action which the delegates adopted minutes before this First Regional Meeting was closed. The meeting included in its program of activities, a visit to the statue of the “Bronze Titan” Antonio Maceo, erected at the Heroes Park in Kingston, where a wreath was laid and the commitment to defend the homeland was reiterated.
