Minister of Art and Multiculturalism receives Cuban cultural delegation.

TRINIDAD Y TOBAGO, December 10, 2010.- Honorable Winston Peters, Minister of Art and Multiculturalism, received yesterday morning Abel Acosta, Cuban Deputy Minister of Culture and head of the Cuban Institute of Music. The maestro José María Vitier and Cuban Ambassador in this sister island, Humberto Rivero Rosario, were also present.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Art and Multiculturalism, Mr. Vel Lewis, and prominent artist and intellectual Ms. Patricia “Pat” Bishop, choir mistress of The Lydian Singers attended the meeting.

During the interview, which took on a warm and relaxed tone, Minister Peters welcomed the Cuban cultural delegation to the homeland of pan. They have come on an invitation of The Lydian Singers to participate in four concerts at Queen’s Hall featuring José María Vitier’s Cuban Mass. His wife Silvia Rodríguez Rivero wrote the lyrics for this masterpiece. Allegorical paintings by José Adrián Vitier are being exhibited in the lobby area.

Maestro Vitier expressed his excitement about this visit, his first to the English-speaking Caribbean, and the chance to have his work “not reproduced but re-created”, with the inclusion of the steel pan among other local additions, which make for a unique performance of his Cuban Mass.

The Cuban Deputy Minister reiterated the Cuban Government’s willingness to collaborate in the field of culture, to support the realization of Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural wealth, and to strengthen the links between the two peoples. He seized the opportunity to extend an invitation of Cuban Minister of Culture Abel Prieto to his Trinitarian counterpart to participate in the 31th “Festival del Caribe”, also known as “Fiesta del Fuego”, to be held in Santiago de Cuba from July 3rd to 9th, which will be dedicated to the people and culture of Trinidad y Tobago.

The Trinitarian Minister thanked the invitation and promised to send a cultural delegation to the Caribbean festival. He also said that he would do everything in his power to lead this delegation in person. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Trinidad y Tobago)
