Cuba to provide more health care aid to Jamaica

CUBA, Jan 25, 2010. - Rudyard Spencer, Minister of Health of Jamaica, received this Monday in Kingston a team of Cuban specialists, who will provide assistance to patients of that country and other Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The Minister greeted the 15-member team, and stressed that his country is grateful for the support of Cuba and told the specialists that the experience will be rewarding, reported Prensa Latina news agency.

An agreement between the two Caribbean countries establishes that Cuba provides technical staff, equipment, medicines and other inputs, while the host nation provides the team of specialist facilities, medical and administrative staff, accommodation, meals, transport and other kinds of assistance.

Spencer said that among the projects there is the eye-care program, which begins next Wednesday at the Saint John Hospital in Kingston.

The team of Cuban specialists will treat patients with cataracts, diabetic retinitis and pterygium, among other ailments.

The new facility will allow to treat about five thousand patients per year, and to provide training to Jamaican medical staff.

Yuri Gala, Cuban ambassador to Jamaica, said it was an honor for his country to contribute to the welfare of the Jamaican people. (Cubaminrex - acn)
