INDIA, Jan 25, 2010. - People's Democracy, the weekly of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), highlighted on Friday the elimination of children's malnutrition in Cuba, thanks to the Cuban government efforts to guarantee basic products to the population, despite a US blockade. Although the Cuban advances in health and nutrition face difficulties, the progress could have been greater had it not been for the US blockade, the Indian weekly asserted. The article is based on a recent report published by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) that affirmed that Cuba is the only Latin American country that has eradicated malnutrition. It also quoted statements by UNICEF representative in Havana Jose Juan Ortiz, in which the official called other nations in the world to learn from Cuba, to guarantee protection of children's rights. In a statement for which Cuba and its socialist system should be proud of, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) also recognized Cuba as the country that has achieved more advances in its fight against malnutrition, added People's Democracy. This journal values those achievements as the result of the Cuban government efforts to guarantee basic food products to the population. People's Democracy also stressed that although Cuba has a small Gross Domestic Product per capita; the country is ahead of many rich nations in several economical, social and environmental indicators.
