CUBA, Jan 14, 2010. - The international community has given a fast response to Haiti's aid request, sending tons of foods, medicine, medical equipment and rescue workers. Venezuela sent on Wednesday the first humanitarian aid shipment to Haiti. Richard Canan, Venezuela's deputy Minister of Agriculture said that 100 tons of corn are prepared to be sent to Haiti. Chile's President Michelle Bachelet expressed her solidarity to the Haitian people and their government. He announced the aid sending to the Caribbean country. Guatemala's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reitered in a press release the sending of a plane with 4 officers and 24 search and rescue specialists with a medical and technical equipment to support immediately the situation in Haiti. The first rescue equipment to succor the earthquake victims depart from Spain, which will coordinate the humanitarian aid of the European Union (EU) as president of the bloc. Germany provide funds for 1.5 million Euros to help the victims of the 7.3-degree earthquake that devastated Haiti on Tuesday. Experts estimated that it caused a large number of fatal victims that could amount to thousands. The quake with an epicenter 9 miles away from Port au Prince caused serious damage to the city where at least 100 buildings collapsed, including the Presidential Palace and the United Nations headquarters.
