The president is leading the Cuban delegation to the conference which includes Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and other officials from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting, to be opened by Mexican Head of State Felipe Calderon at the Gran Velas Hotel in the Mayan Riviera, will cover a broad agenda with the main focus on moving forward progress on the creation of a genuine Latin American and Caribbean organization. The thirty three countries involved in the conference are united in their wish to formalise the group and are in Cancun to discuss and agree on certain aspects and details. As well as regional integration, the event will also analyse other relevant issues and adopt declarations on the reconstruction of Haiti, Argentina's sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and on climate change. The draft of the declaration on Haiti acknowledges the efforts made by several countries to support the Haitian people, but draws attention to the fact that Haiti is a sovereign nation and international aid should be coordinated by its own government and the UN. The Unity Summit will approve a resolution against the economic, trade and financial blockade the US government has maintained against Cuba for almost 50 years. Twenty five Heads of State or Government have confirmed their participation in the summit that gathers together the Rio Group and the Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean on Integration and Development.
