Farewell ceremony for Operation Miracle team in Suriname

SURINAME. March 10 2010. - A ceremony took place at the Ministry of Public Health in Suriname to bid farewell to the team of Operation Miracle that has been working for almost two years in the country.

During the farewell ceremony, Health Minister, Dr.Celsius Waterberg, thanked the government of Cuba and the doctors in particular for the outstanding work they have done to treat eye patients in his country. The Cuban doctors have won the recognition of the Surinamese population for their expertise, said Dr. Waterberg.

The Health Minister presented the Cuban specialists with certificates of appreciation for their services rendered during two years to Surinamese with eye ailments.

Cuba’s Ambassador to Suriname, Andrés González Garrido, who attended the ceremony, stated that since October 10, 2005, when Operation Miracle started, Cuban specialists have performed 6,000 eye surgeries and have checked the vision of almost 26,000 Surinamese patients. The diplomat added that Operation Miracle has always received the support and cooperation of the Ministry of Public Health of Suriname as well as the recognition of the population.

Doctor Kenya Morales, head of the Cuban Medical Brigade, Doctor Yordanys Fernandez, head of Operation Miracle, and other members of his team gave examples of the gratitude they received from patients. The Cuban specialists expressed their willingness to continue their solidarity mission either in Suriname or wherever they are needed.

Also present at the ceremony were high officials of the Ministry of Public Health of Suriname as well as Maribel Duarte González, second secretary of the Cuban diplomatic mission and all members of Operation Miracle in Suriname. (Cubaminrex – EmbaCuba Suriname)
