• Affirms Cristina Fernández during bicentenary celebrations for the May Revolution

ARGENTINA, May 25, 2010. Argentine President Cristina Fernández presided over the final day of the bicentenary celebrations of the May Revolution, the seed of independence in that nation, reported EFE.

In an event at government headquarters – and closing five days of activities attended by hundreds of thousands of people – Fernández stated that, "With our diversities and differences, we know that the road for us is the same one taken with tremendous courage by San Martín, Bolívar, O’Higgins, and also by the indigenous peoples."

"We believe in history, in memory, we have identity, we are passionate about truth and justice," stated the president, adding that this is a time to celebrate "a popular bicentenary, with the people out on the streets," according to Telam.

Likewise, she called on the Argentine people to overcome their differences and participate in the construction of a country "of which we can all feel part," and commented that since her election as president of the nation in 2007, these celebrations have become an event of vital importance.

"Thank you very much for joining us on the 200th birthday of the homeland. Viva the homeland, viva Argentina, viva Latin America!" she concluded. Present at the event were Presidents Hugo Chávez (Venezuela), Evo Morales (Bolivia), Rafael Correa (Ecuador), Fernando Lugo (Paraguay), Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil), José Mujica (Uruguay), Sebastián Piñera (Chile) and Cuban Vice President Esteban Lazo.(Cubaminrex- Granma Internacional)
