One of the accords was penned by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Botswana, Phandu Skelemani, and by Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Marcelino Medina. The other agreement, which establishes that Cuba will “contribute to the strengthening and development of a comprehensive health care system in the Republic of Botswana,” was signed by Dr. John Seakgosing, Minister of Public Health of the African nation, and by his Cuban counterpart, Jose Ramon Balaguer. After the signing ceremony at the headquarters of the Cuban Foreign Ministry in Havana and responding to questions by reporters, Skelemani said that these new accords further strengthen the existing ties between Cuba and Botswana. He also condemned Washington’s almost 50-year-old economic blockade of the island and praised Cuba’s solidarity with many other peoples around the world. Then, Seakgosing, thanked Cuba for its medical assistance and added that the presence of Cuban health professionals in Botswana will contribute to the improvement of his country’s health care levels. The visitors are part of a delegation from Botswana headed by their President, Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama, who arrived in Cuba on Monday for a three-day official visit that concludes on Thursday.
