Venezuelan Minister Thanks Cuba for Cooperation in Sports

CUBA, June 16, 2010. Venezuelan Sports Minister Victoria Mata expressed on Tuesday in Caracas her gratitude for Cuba’s support to boost top performance in sports and popular participation in physical and recreational activities.

Mata declared that the sports accord signed with the Caribbean island has guaranteed the presence in the South American nation of Cuban technicians and specialists with high practical and pedagogical qualification, the Prensa Latina news agency reports.

The Minister pointed out that trainers, physical education and recreation professors, as well as Caribbean sports stars, have shared their experiences to contribute to Venezuela’s good results in regional and international games.

While referring to Cuba’s support for the generalization of physical education, the Sports Minister said this is as important as top performance.

In this regard, she highlighted the development of the Barrio Adentro Deportivo program, which has been taken to all places in the country.

Mata pointed out that Venezuela ended 2009 with more than four million people practicing sports, thanks to this initiative implemented in the country for the first time by the government of President Hugo Chavez.

Cuba has over 10,000 voluntary workers in this sector in Venezuela, who offer their services in more than 200 municipalities of the 24 states making up that South American nation. (Cubaminrex- ACN).-
