Summit for Haiti Achieves Commitments Dominican Republic, June 3, 2010. Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez expressed his satisfaction at outcome of the Summit for the future of Haiti, concluded here, in which funds needed to re-found the Caribbean nation were raised. According to Fernandez, a US$ 7.8 billion commitment was reached at the meeting, in a list led by Venezuela with a total of US$ 2.6 billion, plus the cancellation of a debt for the fuel supplied through Petrocaribe program. The president added that the total of commitments exceeds the US$ 10.8 billion considered essential for the re-foundation of Haiti during the Summit held at the UN headquarters in New York in March. The list also includes the Inter American Development Bank with US$ 200 million a year for 10 a decade; Brazil with US$ 55 million and the building of a dam in Artibonite zone; the European Union with US$ 50 million and the cancellation of the debt with France, announced by President Nicolas Sarkozi. The immediate provision of the over US$ 200 million needed to balance the Haitian national budget of the current fiscal year is also among the commitments. The World Summit on the Future of Haiti opened on Wednesday morning at the Dominican Punta Cana beach resort with the participation of representatives of 55 states and 35 organizations.(Cubaminrex- ACN)
