Primary School in Kingston holds Jamaica-Cuba Friendship Festival.


JAMAICA, 11 April 2011.-  Last Friday, 8th April, at the Duhaney Park Primary School, a Cuba-Jamaica Friendship Festival was held. This was the first activity of this kind that is held in this important school with an enrolment of 2000 pupils (divided in two sessions) and which is located in the capital of the country.

Present, on the Cuban side, were the Chief of the Cuban State Mission, Ambassador Yuri Gala Lopez, Third Secretary, Yaima Gonzalez; Comrade Gumersindo Cruz, Head of the Cuban Educational Brigade in this country, as well as teachers, such as Rosa Maria Boza and Lester Ruben Viltres, who teach in the aforementioned school.

In her speech, Mrs. Lidia Richard, the school Principal, welcomed the Cuban Ambassador and his accompaniment, while she praised the work carried out by the aforesaid Cuban teachers, stating that they have attained tangible results in the teaching of the Spanish language and have contributed to foster the feelings of admiration and respect towards Cuba among their students.

When addressing the audience, Ambassador Yuri Gala, mentioned the cooperation Cuba offers Jamaica in the educational sector through the presence of 46 Cuban teachers assigned to different schools in the country, which contributes to the strengthening of the friendly relations between both our nations. The Cuban diplomat availed of the opportunity to refer to the celebrations in Cuba of the 50th anniversary of the Jose Marti Schoolchildren Organization and the recently closed 5th Congress of the Cuban Schoolchildren.

In this Cuba-Jamaica Friendship Festival, several cultural expressions were displayed by the Jamaican schoolchildren, who also showed their knowledge of the Spanish language.

As part of this tour, Ambassador and his cortege visited the Spanish language-specialized classroom, where they could see an exhibition on Cuba and Jamaica which included their cultures and traditions, as well as teaching aids devised by the teachers themselves with the help of young Jamaicans who are being trained as teachers.
