Raul Castro Welcomes Hugo Chavez in Cuba

CUBA, 07 August 2011.- President Raul Castro welcomed Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at the Jose Marti International Airport at about midnight on Saturday night.

Chavez was accompanied by his foreign minister, Nicolas Maduro, Juventud Rebelde newspaper reported.

The National Assembly of Venezuela unanimously approved on Saturday the authorization requested by President Hugo Chavez to travel to Cuba for the second stage of chemotherapy, after being operated on from a carcinogenic tumor.

Parliament President Fernando Soto convened an extraordinary session to debate on the permission, using articles 235 and 185 of the Constitution.

Chavez sent the letter with his travel request to the top authority of the Legislative on Friday, after his medical team determined to continue his chemotherapy sessions on the Caribbean island to prevent the reproduction of possible malignant cells.

The head of state asserted that his postoperative rehabilitation progresses positively, but that he should continue the treatment scientifically planned in detail for the full recovery of his health.

In July, the president carried out the first chemotherapy cycle satisfactorily in Cuba.

Before departure, he granted legal authority to Executive Vice-president Elias Jaua and to the Minister of Finances, Jorge Giordani, to pass decrees and grant funds while he receives his treatment in Cuba. (Cubaminrex-ACN)
