CARACAS, VENEZUELA, December 3rd, 2011.- The historical Summit of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) ended this afternoon in Caracas, Venezuela. The two-days Summit was attended by 33 Heads of State and Governments from Latin American and the Caribbean. Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of State and Ministers was heading Cuba´s delegation. The Summit´s opening ceremony was held at Teresa Carreño theater in Caracas, Venezuela. During the first presidential session of CELAC Summit, President Raúl Castro expressed that “in the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), Cuba will work with dedication and altruism for a future with peace and justice, and for the will to maintain the independence of what José Martí called Our America”. President Raúl praised the Government and people of Venezuela for the warm welcome in the year of the 200 anniversary of its Independence. Raul Catro also thanked the Presidents and Foreign Affairs Ministers for the designation of Cuba as host of the CELAC Summit in 2013. During the two days, the 33 Latin America and Caribbean nations were heard in the voices of their heads of delegation, among other issues, to support the creation of CELAC. In today´s last session, 19 final doccuments were voted and approved by acclamation, among them, a special communiqué to reject United States economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, and urge the US Government to end this policy “that causes huge and unjustified damages to the well-being of the Cuban people”. The Heads of State and Government of Latin America and the Caribbean officially approved the creation of this new regional organization through the Declaration of Caracas. CELAC´s presidency was handed over to Chilean President Sebastián Piñera. (Cubaminrex)
