Cuban Foreign Minister paid an official visit to Jamaica.

JAMMAICA, December 15th, 2010.-  Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the republic of Cuba, paid an official visit to Jamaica from December 12-14, 2010. The delegation, headed by the Cuban Foreign Minister, was also made up of Director for the Latin America and the Caribbean Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Marielena Ruiz Capote and Cuban Ambassador to Jamaica, Yuri Gala Lopez.

Within the framework of this official visit, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez was welcomed by Prime Minister Bruce Golding, paid a courtesy call on the Leader of the Opposition, Mrs. Portia Simpson Miller and met former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson in the latter’s capacity as CARICOM Special Representative on Haiti.

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez held official talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kenneth Baugh at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, an opportunity the respective delegations took, to exchange viewpoints on issues of mutual interest and review the relations of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Both Foreign Ministers stated their satisfaction at the dynamism of the bilateral relations and underscored the priority they grant to the further strengthening of the friendly and cooperation bilateral relations, as well as to the bonds of Cuba with the Caribbean Community.

Foreign Minister Baugh expressed gratitude on behalf of the Government of Jamaica for the cooperation received from Cuba in various fields, mainly in the areas of health and human resources development. As a result of those exchanges, an extensive Joint Communiqué which embraces bilateral, regional and international issues was adopted.
 

As part of the program of activities, the Cuban Foreign Minister and the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Culture, Olivia Grange, laid a wreath at the bust of Major General Antonio Maceo Grajales, located in Kingston. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez also toured one of the facilities of the Cuba/Jamaica Ophthalmology Center where he exchanged standpoints with Minister of Health, Rudyard Spencer, and the Cuban medical staff working at the aforementioned Center opened in January, 2010.

The Cuban delegation also toured the Institute of Jamaica and attended a luncheon hosted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kenneth Baugh.
In the evening, December 13, Minister Bruno Rodriguez and the rest of the members of the delegation attended a diplomatic reception held at the Cuban Ambassador’s residence and at the end of this function, they met with a group of Cuban professionals that make up the Medical and Educational Brigades, as well as other members of Cuban State Mission, including the Embassy’s staff.
