Chavez, Fidel Celebrate Venezuelan Victory in Soccer

CUBA, July 18th, 2011.- Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez Frías, who is in Cuba to fulfil the second stage of chemotherapy treatment, celebrated the 2-1 victory of his country’s soccer team in a match versus Chile on Sunday. This triumph catapulted that country to the America Cup semi-finals for the first time in sports history.

Prensa Latina news agency noted that the South American Head of State followed the game through his account on Twitter together with Cuban leader Fidel Castro. From the beginning of the match the president kept up with all the details, and celebrated the first goal scored by his country’s squad with an emotional exclamation of ¨Gooooooaaaaaalll of the Fatherland! Long live Venezuela!¨

The Cuban press agency also informed that Venezuelan plazas and public places were crowded with the people who gathered to enjoy the game and cheer for the national team.

Venezuela reached the semi- finals for the first time in soccer history since 1916. This country will compete at this level with Paraguay, which beat the current champion and favoured team of Brazil in penalties. (Cubaminrex-ACN-RHC)
