Cuban Ambassador to Peru Presented with Medal of Machu Picchu CUBA, July 14, 2011.- Luis Flores, mayor of the Peruvian city of Cusco, presented Cuban ambassador to Lima, Luis Delfin Perez, with the Medal for the Centennial of the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Perez was the only foreigner who received the medal among the 34 persons honored with this award, which recalls the discovery of that pre-Columbian city for modern world: the arrival of US explorer Hiram Bingham to the city’s ruins on July 24, 1911, the Prensa Latina news agency reported. Flores highlighted the diplomat’s contribution to the international knowledge of Machu Picchu, which was a city of kings, located at some 2,800 meters above sea level. Likewise, the mayor of the former capital of the Inca Empire underlined Cuba’s cooperation with Cusco, especially the work of a brigade of ophthalmologists that carries out eye surgeries and sees the population of this and other regions free of charge. In a ceremony attended by the president of the region, Jorge Acurio, Perez expressed his appreciation for the medal, and expressed that he didn’t receive it as a personal honor but as a tribute to his country and as a gesture of fraternity between the two peoples.
