New Square to Honor Cuba in Honduras

HONDURAS, June 30, 2011.- A new square dedicated to honor Cuba’s solidarity with the Honduran people will be built in San Pedro Sula, as a gesture of the will of the two peoples to strengthen the historic bonds of friendship and cooperation uniting them.

The project was designed by a couple who lives in San Pedro Sula, active members of the Association of Cubans Living in Honduras and will be officially launched during the 5th National Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, to be held in Honduras in July.

San Pedro Sula is one of the regions with the most activities of resistance to the military coup carried out against constitutional president Manuel Zelaya.  Thousands of Zelaya’s supporters went to La Libertad Square to receive the former head of state, who arrived in this city two years after his removal from office in 2009.

The first Cuba Square was built in Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital, in 2005, in which there’s a statue of Cuba’s National Hero Jose Marti, accompanied by busts of patriots Antonio Maceo and Máximo Gómez. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
