Solidarity Rally for the Release of Cuban Five Held in Jamaica.
KINGSTON, May 25, 2011.-Last May 19, a solidarity rally was held at the PCJ auditorium of the nation’s capital, in the presence of Adriana Perez and Olga Salanueva, wives of Gerardo Hernández y René González.
The said event, organized by the friendship group “Friends of Cuba”, with the support of other groups making up the solidarity movement, became an act of renewal of the commitment and support of the just cause in favour of the release of the Five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly imprisoned in U.S. jails.
The aforementioned Auditorium was filled with the attendance of numerous persons, including Cuban residents, members of the Solidarity Movement and the Cuban State Mission. Also present, were the Venezuelan Ambassador and the Charge d’ affaires of Nicaragua, as well as some officials from the Jamaican government.
Several speakers took the floors on behalf of: Group “Friends of Cuba”, The Jamaica-Cuba Friendship Association (Kingston and Westmoreland Chapters), Portland Friendship Group, the PNPYO, the PNP Women’s Movement, as well as the Association of Cubans Residing in Jamaica (ACRJ). Both in the speeches and the messages sent by other groups, it became evident a clear supportive stance toward Cuba and the just cause for the immediate release of our Five Heroes. An ACRJ member presented both Adriana and Olga with memorial tablets.
In his speech, Ambassador Yuri Gala Lopez gave a summary of the different stages the case has gone through up to the current stage, including the issue of the presentation of a habeas corpus. Likewise, he denounced the unjust imprisonment these five Cubans are suffering and the violations committed against them and their relatives, while he highlighted the tremendous role the solidarity movement can play in this fight.
Afterwards, Adriana and Olga spoke about their experiences and exchanged views with the attendees regarding this complex battle and the dignified stance of these Five Cuban Heroes. Both women reiterated that president Barack Obama has the constitutional powers and the moral obligation to serve justice by immediately releasing the Five.
The function ended in a very friendly way with expressions of !Long Live Cuba and Jamaica!, !Long live the Cuban Revolution!, !Long live the Five!, among other gestures of solidarity. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Jamaica)
