Cuba, El Salvador for Economic Cooperation

By Rafael Contreras
CUBA, March 10th, 2011.- Cuba and El Salvador are seeking Thursday in this capital to boost economic, scientific, technical and sports cooperation during its First Negotiating Round.

The meeting, taking place in Havana for two days, has made positive progresses and an understanding by both parties, a diplomatic source told Prensa Latina.

According to the agenda, Salvadorian Trade Policy director Carlos Moreno and assistant director Alma Sonia Nuila attended talks.

The objective is to foster cooperation between both nations, as well as promote Cuba's transfer of technology to El Salvador, Moreno said.

To establish a partial-range agreement is in response to the interests by Salvadorian exports. They sell products to Cuba, and expect to sign several collaboration accords.

For that reason, they want to create a normative framework to facilitate and increase trade with the Caribbean nation.

According to Moreno, the agreement is expected to be signed after three negotiation rounds. It is expected that the trade report is favorable for El Salvador.

According to the working agenda, delegations analyze access to market, rules, solutions, health and phytosanitary measures, among others.

The text states that during the visit to the island of President Mauricio Funes in October 2010, a memorandum of understanding was signed to establish a partial-range agreement, which should be approved Thursday in Havana.

According to the Ministry of Economy, El Salvador exports to Cuba products such as medicines, syringes, serums, papers, cardboards, suture needles and mattresses, among others.

Vitamins, lab diagnostic reagents, cigarettes and cigars, jute fabrics, antibiotics, and others, are also imported, the Communications Management of that ministry said.(Cubaminrex-PL)
