Cuban Movie Showcase opened at the University of the West Indies

JAMAICA, March 7, 2011.- In the evening hours of last Friday, February 18, a Cuban Movie Showcase was inaugurated at the University of the West Indies (UWI, Mona Campus), by the initiative of the Association of Cuban Residents in Jamaica, with the support of UWI’s Latin-American-Caribbean Centre and the Embassy of Cuba.
After a brief overview on the film, and on the subsequent screenings, “Viva Cuba” was put on, a movie that received the cheers and applauses of the attendees from the very beginning. Cuban residents, Jamaican students of Spanish, workers of that University, and members of the Cuban State Mission, expressed their satisfaction and recognition for the importance of the topic and the way in which it was portrayed in the movie.

Highlighted at the screening room were the presence of Mrs. Annette Insanally, Director of the Latin American-Caribbean Centre, University of the West Indies, Aracelis Duffus and Osvaldo Cárdenas, President and Vice-president of the ACRJ, respectively, as well as Micaela Ramirez, Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Cuba.

This Cuban Movie Showcase which will take place for four consecutive Fridays in that prestigious University centre will include movies tackling various issues, including “Baragua”, which will be screened on Friday, February 25, in the framework of the commemoration in Cuba of another anniversary of the resumption of the emancipatory deed against the Spanish colonization (Baire Outcry, February 24, 1895).
