National Ballet of Cuba to Perform in Mexican Cities.

 CUBA, March 15, 2011.- The National Ballet of Cuba (BNC), under the direction of prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, began on Monday a tour around several Mexican cities that will conclude on April 3.

On this occasion, they will visit the southeastern cities of Cancun, Villa Hermosa, Merida, Chetumal and Cozumel. The final performance of the company will take place at the pyramid of Dzibilchaltun, in Merida, according to sources with the BNC.

The program for the tour includes Swan Lake, choreographed by Alicia Alonso upon the original by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.

The main female roles on this occasion will be assumed by Sadaise Arencibia, Anette Delgado, Barbara Garcia, Yanela Piñera and Viengsay Valdas, while Alejandro Virelles, Dani Hernandez and José Losada stand out in the male roles.

Also performing will be young talents such as Yanier Gómez, Osiel Gounod, Alfredo Ibañez, Estheysis Menendez, Arian Molina, Grettel Morejon, Camilo Ramos and Amaya Rodriguez.

This ballet received its premiere on February 20, 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow as The Lake of the Swans.

Then, a successful revival choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov was first staged for the Imperial Ballet on January 15, 1895, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The ballet, initially in four acts, tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse.
