Haitian Senate Demands U.S. Lift the Blockade against Cuba HAITI, November 5, 2011.- The Haitian Senate unanimously approved on Friday a resolution demanding the unconditional lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade by the U.S. government applied against Cuba for more than five decades. The Haitian Senate resolution notes that the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba by the United States has had serious consequences for the development of the island, causing losses valued at $975 billion from 1961 to 2010. The document states that the definitive lifting of the anti-Cuban policy will have very advantageous consequences on the Caribbean region, both for the movement of people, commodities and currencies, such as technological cooperation, scientific, cultural and sports, among others. This is the unanimous position of the 30 senators from different political parties that make up the Legislative branch of Haiti, said Dr. Kely C. Bastian, one of its most prestigious members during a meeting with the special envoys of the Cuban press in this capital. He recalled that late last month the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted for the twentieth consecutive time, and with the overwhelming majority of 186 votes in favor, three abstentions and the only the votes of the U.S. and its ally Israel against, the Cuban resolution demanding the White House eliminate the unilateral and coercive measure. "I do not understand what democracy means to the U.S. administration when it opposes the clamor of the majority of the international community to lift the blockade against Cuba," said the ex-leader of the Senate and National Assembly of Haiti.
